Wild Things: The Value of Prairie Ecosystems

Prairie ecosystems provide a rich, diverse habitat for a multitude of wildlife in DuPage County, especially migratory birds such as meadowlarks, dickcissels, grasshopper sparrows, woodcocks, and bobolinks as well as state-endangered northern harriers, short-eared owls, and Henslow’s sparrows.

The Forest Preserve District's West Chicago Prairie and Springbrook Prairie are abloom with a variety of plants and flowers during the hottest summer months.

Naturalist Abby Dean talks about the unique attributes of prairie ecosystems and some of the best times of year to visit them on Wild Things on WDCB Radio (90.9 FM).
