Explore Dragonfly Monitoring Program at March 23 Workshop

(March 9, 2017) — The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County invites outdoor enthusiasts 18 and older who are interested in becoming volunteer dragonfly monitors to attend a workshop on Thursday, March 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the boardroom at District headquarters at 3S580 Naperville Road in Wheaton.

The workshop will serve as a training session for beginners and a refresher course for returning volunteers. Attendees will learn the general requirements of dragonfly monitors and how to identify common Illinois dragonflies and damselflies using basic anatomy, taxonomy, life histories, photographs and brief descriptions.

To register for the program or get more information, call 630-206-9630 or email nrvolunteer@dupageforest.org by March 17.

“If you’re looking for another way to connect to nature and give some time to volunteering, this is a great way to do it,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Linda Painter, District 3.

Dragonfly monitors help District ecologists assess dragonfly populations and update preserve species lists. They perform several summer censuses in major habitats in a designated preserve. Surveys generally take one to two hours to complete and are performed under favorable weather conditions between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. No prior knowledge of dragonflies is necessary. Monitors must commit to at least one breeding season but will ideally observe a site for several years.

“This volunteer program is perfect for someone who is interested in dragonflies and wants to learn more about native dragonfly species in DuPage County,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has been connecting people to nature for more than 100 years. More than 4 million people visit its 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, five education centers and scores of programs each year. For information, call 630-933-7200 or visit dupageforest.org, where you can also link to the District’s e-newsletter, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube pages.
