See a soaring red-tailed hawk, launch a model glider to new heights or, on a clear day, catch a glimpse of the Chicago skyline from the top of the Greene Valley hill at Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville. The hill opens to the public on May 3 and will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 26.
An access drive is located off Greene Road, south of 75th Street. Visitors can reach the hilltop by car, and parking is available at the summit, which stands 190 feet above land surface, the equivalent of 980 feet above sea level. District staff will be on hand with binoculars and a spotting scope.
Model-glider and -sailplane enthusiasts can launch their nonpowered crafts at the hilltop. A valid model-aircraft permit is required and can be obtained through Visitor Services by calling (630) 933-7248. For a more “down-to-earth” exploration, visitors can hike and bike the 2.6-mile Hawk Trail, which circles the hill’s base.
The hill is a former landfill that is now the site of a gas-to-energy plant; disposal operations began in 1974 and ended in 1996. Revenue generated from the landfill was applied toward construction costs; as a result, tax dollars were not used for the recreational developments.
With over 25,000 acres, 140 miles of trail and 60 preserves all right at your feet, there's a perfect way to enjoy DuPage County's forest preserves that's just waiting for you. For information, call (630) 933-7200, or visit www.dupageforest.com.
